Sometime in the 1990’s I began to notice all the old, unused air raid sirens scattered about Los Angeles.  The Cold War was over and I wondered if the city was finally going to remove them, or celebrate them or what.  I drove around looking for them until I discovered that City Hall had a list.  The guy who gave me the list didn’t seem real happy about it, but they weren’t exactly a state secret.  To this day I feel like the complete lack of celebration over the end of the Cold War was a missed opportunity.  The title of the show I never had was to be “The Winning Side: Air Raid Sirens in Post-Cold War Los Angeles,” the idea being that given the perpetually scruffy aesthetics of greater Los Angeles you would never imagine by looking at LA that we had won.
