One of the cardinal rules of portraiture is to not use a wide angle lens.  This was shot on a 4x5 camera and a very sharp 90mm lens.  A “normal” lens for 4x5 is around 210mm.  I can’t remember what caused me to do this — a lot of the assignments at Art Center were vague, but “Egghead Courtney” still looks pretty dashing.

Another cardinal rule was to always focus on the eyes.  This is only a 300 dpi scan of the negative, and it’s still clear how much detail you could get on 4x5 film.  Which is one of the reasons I was a large format snob for such a long time.
