My first job in New York was working for the Martin Wiener Ad Agency. It was a one man shop, and Marty’s big client was ABC Carpets and Rugs which ran a full page ad every week in the New York Times. Somehow, we’d always run late, and Marty would end up begging the guys on the press to give him ten minutes so he could take a cab up to the Times. He knew all the press men by their first names, and they always put up with it because it was such steady money for the paper. Marty seemed invigorated by the stress, but I never got used to it.
